What is a postal match?

Ooooooooooookay now…remind me next
time we do a .22 shoot that I change the size of the X
ring….
Needless to say, the
Surplusrifle.com postal matches are growing by leaps and
bounds and this Little Guys match beats them all. We
had a total of 60 shooters, with 81 sets of targets sent
in. Interestingly, most people shot in the civilian
rifle categories, not the mil surp ones, which, to me,
seems to say that there aren’t as many M69 Romanian
Trainers out there as I thought.
In all cases, the top
placed shooters had perfect 150 point scores and it came
down to the X count. In the 1A and 1B categories it
came down to the maximum distance of the shots in a
group that broke the ties.

Featured Shooter |
|
Zane A.
Zane got into the
collecting/shooting of mil-surps when his dad
gave Zane his 1903 Springfield that he got from
the NRA after WW2 (for $25!). This 1903 is his
favorite of his collection. This may have
started his interest in US weapons, although he
does have some Russians as well. This favorite
calibers are .30-06 and .45-70. |
|
 |
| His wished
for mil-surp of choice is a M1918A2 BAR.
Although Zane has been shooting since he was 10,
he only recently started to shoot
competitively. He shoots his AR-15 in the
National Match course at his local club every
month and shot his first cross the course match
at the Texas Sate Rifle Association
Championships in Waco just a few months ago. He
also bird hunts occasionally (hopefully not with
his AR…..). Zane’s greatest shooting
accomplishments include when he shot a 449/500
on a windy day for the 100 yard National Match
Course and also when he shot a 5 gallon bucket
at 1000 yards with his 45-70…and only took 5
shots to do it! |

Another noteworthy item for
this match: |
A letter from Bryan H. of Stirling, Ontario.
“I have two rifles entered in different
categories but it is this one, my Cooey Model 75
that I would like to mention specifically.
This old single shot was the first gun my father
ever owned, having bought it with his paper
route money when he was 12 yr old in 1948. Dad
was not much of an enthusiast when it came to
firearms, but he did recognize the need to have
.22 around. It was with this unassuming little
single shot that he game my brother and I oru
first lessons in firearm safety and how to
shoot. I think we only had it out once every
couple of years to deal with squirrels but like
an old piece of furniture, it was comforting to
know it was around. |
|
 |
When dad died 10 years ago, I picked up it
up from the house because my mother didn’t want
it and gave it a home in my gun cabinet. It has
seen only the occasional use as I have others
that are more suited to the tasks at hand. With
your Postal Match #9, I decided to dust it off
and stretch its legs.
I knew it was accurate but I did not appreciate
it until I stated the match. I was very
impressed. It is not a high end target rifle by
any means and would greatly benefit from a set
of good target sights, but that isn’t going to
happen. The barleycorn front and U-notch rear
sight are going to stay put and I will continue
to make sight adjustments with light taps of a
hammer. Just as God and Mr. Cooey intended. As a
result, I intend to pay more attention to this
piece of my personal history and give it the
attention and respect it always deserved but
never demanded.” |

|
I was surprised that as many people
shot that did. Why is this? Spring/summer time fun
before the summer work takes over? Nice weather?
Easy/cheap to shoot rifles? Everyone has one? Who
knows for sure. It does seem that everyone had a good
time shooting. I didn’t get one complaint of recoil
bruising either…. |
