What is a postal match?

First off, let’s take a step backward to the Postal Match 5 results.  If you look under my name, Ted J., you will notice that I shot a FR-8 Spanish rifle….but really..  Well there is another part of that story…

You see, it was cold, very cold.  I loaded up the FR8 with 7.62 NATO ammo and proceeded to shoot the 50 yard targets.  The rifle was shooting high, so I decided to adjust the front sight elevation.  I removed the “fake” bayonet lug storage compartment from the front of the rifle (that’s where normally I keep the adjustment tool)..and lo and behold, the damn thing wasn’t in there!  I was mad, perturbed and upset all at once.  After all, not only could I not adjust my sights, I had lost the $11 tool that was fairly hard to come by!  I shot the targets and went home…but the plot thickens…

After a while I decided to clean the two rifles (FR8 and K31) that I had fired.  I grabbed the rifle case with the FR8 in it (it’s obviously much shorter than the K31).  Opened it up and, well, let’s just say I was beating my head against the wall.  To verify what I found in the case, I opened up the safe and sure enough, there, all nicely tucked between an Enfield and a Type 99 was….my FR8!  You see, the rifle that I took with me in the case and shot at the range that cold day was my FR7!  It was soooo cold and soooo windy, I did not even notice that the bolt was bent and it was a completely different rifle!  Lucky for me, both of them are in 7.62 NATO and I DID NOT forget to bring the ammo!

As a new feature and to add some “culture” to our matches, each postal match I will randomly pick one of the shooters who submit targets and ask them if they would like to step into the “spotlight”.  They are, of course, under no obligation to participate, we’ll only deduct 10 points from their score if they don’t do it…(just kidding).    If they do choose to step into the spotlight, I’ll ask them some questions about themselves and their interests (pertaining to shooting, of course).  Photos would be great, they can be of themselves, or perhaps a favorite place to shoot, or favorite rifle..etc..  We’ll identify them only as much as we do in the match results, any other info will be strictly voluntary.  So, for Match 6….

Meet a SurplusRifle. Com postal match shooter…………

Paolo N. from Italy

Paolo is a collector of knives and military arms, and guitars, which he plays. He started shooting with his dad, who was a hunter. He didn’t start collecting surplus rifles until the early 90’s, because at that time there was a wide selection of rifles being offered. He got into the military surplus pistols as well. He is really into (obviously) the Italian Mannlicher Carcano model 91 and all of its variants, but, he says, they are hard to come by.

Paolo’s first military surplus rifle was not actually a surplus rifle. It was a commemorative model (50 years, 1941-91) Iver Johnson M-1 Carbine. As he puts it, ““SHE” is a really beauty and I will never sell “HER” because “SHE” was the first.”

Paolo’s goal is to collect all the rifles in use form the beginning of WW1 to the end of WW2, from every country (belligerent and not) and he would like to put together a display case with each under it’s own national flag.

We had 40 shooters send in their targets, obviously several of them shot more than one category.  We had several female shooters as well as a couple of junior shooters this time around.
