Label Information:

An industry proven penetrating oil that has no equal. Kroil Quickly loosens rusted nuts and bolts - frees frozen shafts, pulleys, etc. Kroil by Kano laboratory penetrates to 1 millionth inch spaces. Dissolves rust, lubricates, cleans and prevents rust, great as a gun bore cleaner, it displaces moisture. Kroil the oil that creeps.

Wife Rating:

1

Odor/Characteristics:
Oily pungent odor.  Very slick feeling pinkish liquid.  Not really a “gun cleaning” solvent per se, it has a serious following in the shooting world for use as a cleaner.

Kano Kroil

Rep One Salt Treated (10 Passes of Solvent)

Rep One No Salt (Control) (10 Passes of Solvent)

Rep Two Salt Treated (15 Passes of Solvent)

Rep Two No Salt (Control) (15 Passes of Solvent)

Not really a “gun solvent” per se.  Kroil does not appear to remove all the salt nor inhibit the rust to form on residual salt.

Rep One Salt Treated (10 Passes of Solvent)

Rep One No Salt (Control) (10 Passes of Solvent)

Rep Two Salt Treated (15 Passes of Solvent)

Rep Two No Salt (Control) (15 Passes of Solvent)

Wife Rating:

2 (big plus)

Odor/Characteristics:
This clear liquid has no discernable smell at all.

Outers Bore Cleaner Odorless solvent pump spray bottle

Rep One Salt Treated (10 Passes of Solvent)

Rep One No Salt (Control) (10 Passes of Solvent)

Rep Two Salt Treated (15 Passes of Solvent)

Rep Two No Salt (Control) (15 Passes of Solvent)

Although it came in a pump, I opened the bottle and saturated a patch using a dropper.  Gave very good salt removal results with no odor at all.

Product Test: Break-free Bore Cleaning Foam

Product Name: Break-free Bore Cleaning Foam
Website: http://www.break-free.com/
Label Information:

Non-toxic and odorless, chemically removes copper and brass compounds from the barrel in 15 minutes, and leaves a protective film behind to impede the accumulation of residue. Has a pH value of 12 and can be used between the temperatures of -22° and 122°F. Packaged in an aerosol can, easier to use than other ammonia-based products. In addition, this cleaner also removes normal combustion waste from your gun's barrel, eliminating the need for a second cleaner.

Wife Rating:

1.5

Odor/Characteristics:
Foaming cleaner, much like shaving cream.  Slightly fishy smell that probably comes from the propellant gases.

Break-free Bore Cleaning Foam

Rep One Salt Treated (10 Passes of Solvent)

Rep One No Salt (Control) (10 Passes of Solvent)

Rep Two Salt Treated (15 Passes of Solvent)

Rep Two No Salt (Control) (15 Passes of Solvent)

To use this foam, I filled a Dixie cup with it (the consistency of shaving cream) and then lathered on a generous amount onto the patch, which was then swiped over the metal.  Because it is a foam, it may have given inconsistent results on the second test.

Product Test: Slip 2000 725 Gun Cleaner Degreaser (tested as a pump liquid)

Product Name: Slip 2000 725 Gun Cleaner Degreaser (tested as a pump liquid)
Website: http://www.slip2000.com/
Label Information:

Strong, water-based, aerosol cleaner/degreaser efficiently strips grease, oil, carbon, and lead from gun parts and leaves no residue or odor; also works great as a bore cleaner. Easy application; spray, wipe, lubricate. Safe for use on all your guns (including blackpowder); won’t harm plastic, bluing, sealed wood, or rubber.  Biodegradable.

Wife Rating:

2

Odor/Characteristics:
No odor , pinkish clear liquid.

Slip 2000 725 Gun Cleaner Degreaser (tested as a pump liquid)

Rep One Salt Treated (10 Passes of Solvent)

Rep One No Salt (Control) (10 Passes of Solvent)

Rep Two Salt Treated (15 Passes of Solvent)

Rep Two No Salt (Control) (15 Passes of Solvent)

It appears from the test that a little bit more “elbow grease” in the form of more swipes with the patch, yields better results.  In general that was true across the board on all solvents.

Product Test: Hoppe’s Elite Foaming Gun Cleaner (non propellant aerosol)

Product Name: Hoppe’s Elite Foaming Gun Cleaner (non propellant aerosol)
Website: http://www.hoppes.com/
Label Information:

Originally developed to clean the $28 million F-16 fighter for the U.S. Air force. Its special blend of chelating agents, corrosion inhibitors and surfactants safely penetrate the pores of metal through a non-toxic solvent base. In fact, a firearm treated with Hoppe's Elite is cleaner than when it shipped from the factory.  Every time a gun is fired carbon, lead, copper or plastic fouls it. The carbon residue embeds itself deep into the pores of the bore metal and acts like glue, attracting more fouling. Continuous firing layers more carbon, lead and most copper fouling onto the surface of the bore. It is approved as safe by all major gun manufacturers and it exceeds EPA and MILSPEC requirements.

Wife Rating:

2

Odor/Characteristics:
Very very slight perfumy soap smell.  Clear liquid.  Comes as a hand pump foaming cleaner.  Also sold under the name of Mpro-7 (reviewed on Surplusrifle.com at:  http://www.surplusrifle.com/reviews/mpro7/index.asp

Hoppe’s Elite Foaming Gun Cleaner (non propellant aerosol)

Rep One Salt Treated (10 Passes of Solvent)

Rep One No Salt (Control) (10 Passes of Solvent)

Rep Two Salt Treated (15 Passes of Solvent)

Rep Two No Salt (Control) (15 Passes of Solvent)

Even though this cleaner is a foam, it is packaged in a manual pump, much like the foaming soaps that one buys for the kitchen or bathroom.  I was able to use the solvent in a liquid state instead of foam by opening the bottle.  It worked very well.

Shooter’s Choice MC#7

Rep One Salt Treated (10 Passes of Solvent)

Rep One No Salt (Control) (10 Passes of Solvent)

Rep Two Salt Treated (15 Passes of Solvent)

Rep Two No Salt (Control) (15 Passes of Solvent)

Did not fair well in salt removal.

PRODUCT NAME

Rep One Salt Treated (10 Passes of Solvent)

Rep One No Salt (Control) (10 Passes of Solvent)

Rep Two Salt Treated (15 Passes of Solvent)

Rep Two No Salt (Control) (15 Passes of Solvent)

Unfortunately this solvent did not fair too well against the salt on the metal.
