The Poor Man's Sniper Rifle By: Dan Boone, Forward by Duncan Long Softcover · 5-1/2 x 8-1/2, 135 pages · 41 b&w photos, Price: $14.95 Desert Publications P.O. Box 1751 El Dorado, AZ 71731-1751, USA ISBN 0-87947-098-4 Also available from Delta Press Ltd. www.deltapress.com Being a collector and shooter of military surplus rifles, I've always been fascinated with the role of the sniper. When "Enemy at the Gate" came out I bought the DVD and have watched it so many times, my wife would like me to use it as a target now! We all know that ain't gonna happen. So I started reading all I could on snipers and their weapons. Most of the rifles used today are pretty darn expensive and way out of my price range. Then I found this book listed in the Delta Press catalog. The description of it is as follows: "The Poor Man's Sniper Rifle. At last, a complete work on the conversion of readily available surplus military rifles to high performance sniper weapons. D. Boone, describes and illustrates how to make the conversions using simple tools, methods and materials. You will be able to accurize certain bolt action rifles to sniper grade performance for a price that's a fraction of a commercial sniper type rifle." There are 6 chapters and an appendix.
The book is very easy to read and the author explains
everything in a manner that a person with basic tools
and skill can perform the work needed to transform their
favorite mil surp rifle into a "Sniper version". The
beginning is a brief history of some military sniper
rifles and covers only military versions. Very helpful
was the chapter on which rifles to avoid. The rifle he
selects to convert for the book project is an Enfield
No. 4. He takes you step-by-step through the conversion
including accessories such as sights and scopes. The
last chapter covers range finders and recoil pads.
