I recently was contacted by J. Graham of J.R.H.I. and told about a
new product they were launching. He described a bipod mount
that slides over the bayonet lug of a 98k type Mauser.
The mount allows bipods to be attached via a sling
swivel stud. This sounded
intriguing and I agreed to take a look at a sample of
the product.
What came in the mail was exactly as J. Graham described: A small
unit that slides over the bayonet lug and can be locked
in place. When installing the mount I found I had to tap it on to get it to fit.
This makes sense as it would be better to have the
initial fit be tight and then you can inlet (file) the
mount to fit your rifle in a more custom fashion. The
Brownell sales page states that the mount may
require some fitting so this is not a problem but a
feature. I
chose for this article to just tap it into place and
then lock it down. To remove the mount I used a dowel
rod and hammer handle to tap the mount off of the
bayonet lug. It mounted very securely and is a
very stable platform for mounting a bipod. The
required and not supplied bipod can be purchased at most
firearm and shooting sales outlets including
Midwayusa.com. They range in price from starting at
around $39 and going up from there. The model used in
this article usually can be had for less than $69. |

Keep in mind that this is not a
setup that is appropriate for bench shooting.
Because the mount sits far forward it is
difficult to shoot from a bench or table. I was
able to shoot on the bench pictured in figure 4
because of the bench design. This type of mount
is more appropriate for prone shooting (lying
down). As I said before, the mount offers a very stable platform
to shoot from and I was able to shoot some
really nice groups using commercial grade ammo.
Once you fit the mount to your specific 98k
style rifle you can quickly and easily mount and
dismount the mount from the bayonet lug. |

This would be a good configuration for someone that
wanted to do some long range shooting or possibly
hunting and did not want to permanently alter the rifle
from its original military configuration. I find this to
be a very unique and innovative product that performs
well and does exactly what is advertised. |
