A long time ago I picked up a strange, shorter Mosin-Nagant
rifle, in
a trade, that for the life of me I could not identify. I had always figured it
was a captured rifle that the Nazis had taken and bastardized. It has a
somewhat shorter, heavier barrel and a different front sight than that of a
Russian 1891/30 rifle. According to Mr. Lapin's book, "The Mosin-Nagant Rifle",
it turns out that my oddity is a Finnish m/27 rifle. The Finns had
many 1891 Mosin-Nagant receivers that were captured during the Soviet
revolution, WWI, or had purchased from other countries. They contracted to have
barrels manufactured to their new specifications and design and assembled the
m/27 rifles for their own use.
The author has spent an exorbitant, outrageous, extra,
extravagant, and/or extreme (can you tell I used the thesaurus?) amount of time
and effort in the research of this book. He has searched archives in most, if
not all, of the countries that manufactured the rifles to gather the data for
this book. I do not believe that there is a more
complete, single reference on the Mosin-Nagant rifle and all of its offspring in print today.
If there is, I have not found it.
Overall this is an excellent book. I read 165 pages of the
232 total pages the first time I picked it up. It covers all models of the
Mosin-Nagant rifle, including the 1891/30, M-38 Carbine, M-44 Carbine, and the
Finnish m39, just to name a few.
To tell the truth, I used to not really like Mosin-Nagants,
but over the years I have really come to respect the simplicity of the rifle
and all of the variations. Now I find that I own more Mosins than any other
type of rifle. They are very affordable and damned accurate. This book covers
everything about the rifle that a collector of any standing would ever need to
know.
"The Mosin-Nagant Rifle is not an attractive firearm. It
has none of the elegance of, say, the 1903 Springfield, nor is it particularly
arresting in appearance. This venerable rifle is, however, robust, dependable,
reasonably accurate, and has a long and often fascinating history."
