Enfield Rifles Volume 4: The Pattern 1914 and U.S. Model 1917 Rifles
appears as volume four in a series of five.
The mystery is - I couldn't, at first, find any reference to
volume three in the series. I already had volumes one and two:
- Volume One covers the SMLE (No.1) Mk
I and Mk III;
- Volume Two is about the Lee-Enfield
No. 4 and No. 5 Rifles.
Then I viewed the publisher's site to find the following
excerpt:
The demand for this book has been so great that the author
and publisher decided to skip over Volume 3 in the series which will
deal with the original "Long Lee" rifle for the time being. - Publisher
Kind of reminds me of the movies "Gettysburg" and "Gods
and Generals" being released out of order.
Mystery solved, now I can proceed.
As I already said, I have the first two volumes in the series and consider them
"must haves" in my book collection.
With Volume 4, Mr. Stratton has written an excellent
book on the Pattern 1914 and Model 1917 rifles including:
- Extensive descriptions of each rifle;
- Extensive descriptions of each part;
- Information on markings, codes and
inspection stamps;
- History of both rifle's development
and deployment in both World War I and World War II.
The book also includes "step by step" rifle and bolt disassembly
instructions, including two approaches for disassembly of the bolt.
Many of the Pattern 1914 parts are interchangeable with the
Model 1917. In each of the book's part description sections, the author states
whether the specific part is interchangeable between the two models and if it
is not, he explains why.
