1) Make sure rifle is unloaded. Lift the rear sight leaf if your rifle has one. Make certain the safety is in the forward position.
2) Depress the bolt head catch.
3) Pull the bolt to the rear. When the bolt head is over the bolt head catch allow the bolt head catch to push the bolt head upwards. Rotate the bolt head counter clockwise until its flat side points to twelve o'clock as shown in figure 3.
4) Remove the bolt.
5) Unscrew the foresight (front sight) protector screw.
6) Remove the foresight (front sight) protector screw.
7) Remove the foresight (front sight) protector.
8) Unscrew the forward swivel screw.
9) Remove the forward swivel screw.
10) Unscrew the rear swivel screw.
11) Remove the rear swivel screw and the sling swivel.
12) Spread slightly the lower band and remove from the stock.
13) Remove the front hand guard.
14) Remove the rear hand guard.
15) Remove the forward band.
16) Unscrew the rear trigger guard screw.
17) Remove the rear trigger guard screw.
18) Unscrew the front trigger guard screw.
19) Remove the front trigger guard screw.
20) Do not force the trigger guard out. If the trigger guard is stick in place lightly tap on the sides of the arch until it can be easily removed.
21) Figure 21 shows the the fore-end reinforcing screw on a No. 4 Mk 2 rifle. The No. 4 Mk 1 does not have this so if you have a No. 4 Mk 1 proceed to steps 23a and 24a. Unscrew the fore-end reinforcing screw.
22) Remove the fore-end reinforcing screw.
23) Lift the fore-end off of the receiver. If the fore-end is tight or stuck you can use a piece of wood and tap lightly at the top rear of the fore-end on both sides until the fore-end can be removed easily. 
23a) Figure 23a shows the fore-end of a No.4 Mk 1 being removed. 
24) Lift the fore-end off and set aside.

25) Loosen and remove the butt plate screws.
26) Remove the butt plate.
27) Remove felt wad with a cut-off clothes hanger (as shown in figure 27).
28)  The hanger easily hooks felt wad (as shown in figure 28).
29) Insert large flat blade screwdriver into butt stock and place in groove of stock bolt.
30) Using large pliers, unscrew stock bolt counter-clockwise.
31) Remove butt stock.
32) Figure 32 shows the stock bolt.
33) Unscrew the locking bolt screw.
34) Remove the locking bolt screw.
35) Remove the locking bolt spring.
36) Remove the locking bolt and safety catch.
37) You do not have to separate the locking bolt and safety catch I usually leave assembled and just set aside.

Reassembly Instructions

38) Figure 38 shows the locking bolt and safety catch correctly assembled prior to installation.
39) Install the locking bolt and safety catch.
40) Figure 40 shows the safety spring. Note at the top of each part; the safety catch has a channel that the corresponding guide on the safety spring fits into.  Reinstall the locking bolt screw.
41) Hand tighten so the locking bolt screw is snug, but the safety still functions easily.
42) If removed insert the stock bolt into the rear of the butt stock.
43) Figure 43 shows the front of the butt stock with the stock bolt protruding.
44) Reinsert butt stock into butt socket..
45) Insert a large flat blade screw driver into the butt stock trap.
46) Using a pair of pliers, turn large flat blade screw driver clockwise until stock bolt is tight.
47) Reinsert the stock bolt wad into the butt stock trap of the butt stock. Using clothes hanger, push the stock bolt wad all of the way down until it rest flat on the stock bolt.
48) Install the butt plate.
49) Tighten both butt plate screws.
50) Figure 50 shows the correctly installed butt plate.
51) Slide the fore-end stock till it snuggly rests up against the butt socket (as shown in figure 51).
52) If you have an Enfield No. 4 Mk 2, replace fore-end screw.
53) Tighten fore-end screw.
54) Replace trigger guard.
54a) Figure 54a shows the No.4 Mk 1 trigger and trigger guard.  To properly install the trigger and trigger guard the top of the trigger should be inserted just forward of the butt stock socket.
55) Reinstall the front trigger guard screw.
56) Replace rear guard screw.
57) Tighten the rear guard screw.
58) Tighten the fornt guard screw.
59) Reinstall rear hand guard.
60) Replace the forward band.
61) Replace the front hand guard.
62) Spread slightly the lower band and replace on the stock.
63) Replace the rear swivel screw and the sling swivel.
64) Tighten the rear swivel screw.
65) Replace the forward swivel screw.
66) Tighten the forward swivel screw.
67) Replace the foresight (front sight) protector.
68) Replace the foresight (front sight) protector screw.
69) Tighten the foresight (front sight) protector screw.
70) Lift the rear sight leaf if your rifle has one. Make certain the safety is in the forward position.
71) Insert the bolt with the flat side of the bolt head pointing to twelve o'clock.  Depress the bolt head catch and then push the bolt forward.
72) Lower the rear sight leaf.
73) Figure 73 shows the reassembled rifle.
