Safety First! With
the rifle pointed in a safe direction, open
the bolt and make sure the rifle is not
loaded.
1) With the rifle
pointed in a safe direction, open the bolt
and make sure the rifle is not loaded.
2) While holding the
bolt stop out, remove the bolt from the
receiver.
3) Unscrew the cleaning
rod.
4) Remove the cleaning
rod.
5) Unscrew the front
sight protector screw.
6) Remove the front
sight protector screw.
7) Remove the front
sight protector.
8) Depress the upper
band spring.
9) Slide the upper band
off of the barrel.
10) Depress the lower
band spring. Slide the lower band forward
and off the barrel.
11) Unscrew the forward
locking screw.
12) Remove the forward locking screw.
13) Unscrew the forward guard screw.
14) Remove the forward guard screw.
15) Unscrew the rear locking screw.
16) Remove the rear locking screw.
Locking
Screws
Most 98 type Military Mausers have
locking screws that lock the trigger
guard screws in place. The two
figures to the left show the
positions of the locking screws.
17) Unscrew the rear guard screw.
18) Remove the rear guard screw.
19) Lift out the guard. If the guard is
difficult to remove you can turn the rifle
over and tap the guard out from the top
using a wooden dowel.
20) Depress the magazine catch at the inside
front of the trigger guard.
21) Slide the magazine spring out of the
slot in the bottom of the magazine floor
plate.
22) Slide the magazine spring out of the
slot in the bottom of the magazine follower.
23) Drift out the magazine floor pin.
24) Remove the magazine floor.
25) Drift out the pin in the magazine catch.
26) Remove the magazine catch.
27) Remove the magazine catch spring.
28) Lift out the barreled receiver from
the stock.
29) Lift out the bayonet lug.
30) Unscrew the rear screw in the rear
swivel.
31) Remove the rear screw in the rear
swivel.
32) Unscrew the forward screw in the rear
swivel.
33) Remove the forward screw in the rear
swivel.
34) Remove the rear swivel.
35) Unscrew the upper screw in the butt
plate.
36) Remove the upper screw in the butt
plate.
37) Unscrew the lower screw in the butt
plate.
38) Remove the lower screw in the butt
plate.
39) Remove the butt plate.
40) Unscrew the screw at
the front of the rear sight.
41) Remove the screw at the front of the
rear sight.
42) Lift up the rear sight. Slowly and
carefully lift up the rear of the hand guard
so as to pull off the band spring that holds
it on the barrel. Do not force this as it
can easily crack the hand guard.
43) Rotate the hand guard 90 degrees and
lift off over the rear sight leaf.
44) Figure 44 show the location of the sear
pin.
45) Tap out the sear pin.
46) Remove the sear pin.
47) Remove the sear spring.
48) Tap out the trigger pin.
49) Separate the trigger and sear.

Unscrew the bolt stop screw. .
51) Remove the bolt stop screw.
52) Separate the bolt stop from the
receiver.
53) To disassemble the bolt stop I use a
padded vise or if you do not have one then
wrap tape around the end of locking pliers
and secure the bolt stop as shown in figure
53.
54) To remove the bolt stop cover you will
need to tap downward on the section pointed
to in figure 54.
55) Tap downward and then remove the bolt
stop cover. Separate the ejector from the
bolt stop.
56) Using a punch, tap out the rear sight
pin.
57) Remove the rear sight pin.
58) Place a flat blade screw driver at the
forward part of the rear sight leaf.
59) Push down on the rear sight leaf with
the screw driver while pulling the rear
sight leaf to the rear. This will
allow you to remove the rear sight leaf.
60) Tap the rear sight leaf spring
forward.
61) Remove the rear sight leaf spring from
the base.
Reassembly

62) Insert the rear sight leaf spring to the
rear.
63) Tap the rear sight leaf spring to the
rear.
64) Place a flat blade screw driver at the
forward part of the rear sight leaf. Push
down on the rear sight leaf with the screw
driver while pushing the rear sight leaf
forward.
65) When you release pressure the leaf
should stay held in place by the rear sight
leaf spring.
66) Insert the rear sight pin.
67) Tap the rear sight pin in place.
68) Install the ejector in the bolt stop as
shown in figure 68.
69) Slide the bolt stop cover into the
channel on the back of the bolt stop while
using your finger to keep the ejector in
place.
70) Install the bolt stop. Install the
bolt stop screw.
71) Tighten the bolt stop screw. Open and
close the bolt stop a couple of times to
make certain it is correctly installed and
not binding.
72) Assemble the sear and trigger.
73) Install the trigger pin and with a
punch, tap in the trigger pin.
74) Install the sear spring.
75) Position trigger assembly on receiver as
shown in figure 75.
76) Using quick clamps, hold the trigger
assembly in place so your hands can be left
free to tap in the sear pin.
77) Insert the sear pin and tap
into place.
78) Test the trigger to ensure it is
assembled correctly and there is not
binding.
79) Install the butt plate.
80) Install the upper butt plate screw.
81) Tighten the upper butt plate screw.
82) Install the lower butt plate screw.
83) Tighten the lower butt plate screw.
84) Install the rear swivel.
85) Install the forward screw in the rear
swivel.
86) Tighten the forward screw in the rear
swivel.
87) Install the rear screw in the rear
swivel.
88) Tighten the rear screw in the rear
swivel.
89) Install the bayonet lug.
90) Install the magazine catch spring.
91) Install the magazine catch.
92) Install the magazine catch pin.
93) Tap the magazine catch into place.
94) Install the magazine floor plate.
95) Install the magazine floor plate pin.
96) Tap the magazine floor plate pin into
place.
97) Insert the tapered end of the
magazine follower spring into the bottom of
the magazine follower.
98) Insert the other end of the magazine
spring into the magazine floor plate.
99) Close the magazine floor plate and
latch it.
100) Lift the rear sight leaf and slide
the hand guard over as shown in figure 100.
101) Rotate the hand guard as shown in
figure 101.
102) nap the hand guard spring over the
barrel and lay the rear sight leaf down.
103) Install the rear sight screw.
104) Tighten the rear sight screw.
105) Install the barreled receiver into
the stock.
106) Install the guard.
107) Install the forward guard screw.
108) Install the rear guard screw.
109) Partially tighten the forward guard
screw.
110) Partially tighten the rear guard
screw.
111) Completely tighten the forward guard
screw.
112) Completely tighten the rear guard
screw.
113) Install the forward locking screw.

116) Tighten the rear locking screw.
117) Slide the rear band over the barrel.
118) Depress the rear band spring and
slide the rear band into place.

121) Slide the front site protector into
place.
122) Install the front sight protector
screw.
123) Tighten the front sight protector
screw.
124) Install the cleaning rod and hand
tighten.
125) Install the bolt.
126) Close the bolt and you have
completed the disassembly and reassembly of
the Portuguese 1904 Model 39 rifle.
