1)
With the rifle pointed in a safe direction,
open the bolt and make sure the rifle is not
loaded.
2)
Swing out the bolt stop and remove the bolt.
3)
While holding the bolt rotate the cocking
piece 90 degrees counter clockwise to
de-cock the bolt and lower the firing pin.
4)
Figure 4 shows the position the cocking
piece should be in after step 3.
5)
Rotate the bolt head clockwise 90 degrees so
that the slotted (ejector) is aligned with
the un-slotted lug in the bolt.
6) Remove the
cocking piece.
7)
Rotate the bolt head counter clockwise until
it expands forward and starts to slide out
of the bolt body. This is done by aligning
the slotted (extractor) lug on the bolt with
the guide rib of the bolt. Be careful to
firmly hold it so as it does not fly off
under the power of the main spring.
8)
Separate the bolt main body.
9)
Rotate the safety lever to the left as shown
in figure 9.
10) Remove the safety
lever.
11) Separate the bolt
head from firing pin. Note the key on the
firing pin as the arrow points to in figure
11.
12) Separate the main spring from the firing
pin.
13) Figure 13 shows the disassembled bolt.
Note we did not cover the removal of the
extractor from the bolt head. This should
only be done if the extractor requires
replacement. To remove the extractor the
bolt head needs to be securely placed in a
padded vise and then you drive the extractor
forward and off of the bolt head.
Reassembly
Instructions
14) Insert the safety lever into the rear of
the coking piece as shown in figure 14.
15) Rotate the safety lever to the right as
shown in figure 15.
16) Figure 16 shows the keyed firing pin and
rear of the bolt head. They can only be
assembled one way.
17) Slide the bolt head over the firing pin.
18) Slide the main spring onto the firing
pin.
19) Insert the firing pin into the bolt
body.
20) Align the slotted (extractor) lug on the
bolt with the guide rib of the bolt.
21) Insert the bolt head and while holding
the bolt with the bolt face facing towards
you rotate the bolt head clockwise until it
stops. This will be so that the slotted
(ejector) is aligned with the un-slotted lug
in the bolt as shown in figure 21.
22) Figure 22 shows the inside of the
cocking piece and how it is keyed.
23) Slide the cocking piece onto the rear of
the firing pin.
24) Figure 24 shows the position the cocking
piece should be resting in when installed.
25) Rotate the bolt head 90 degrees counter
clockwise.
26) Now this it the most difficult step of
reassembling the bolt. Two tasks need
to be performed simultaneously. While
holding the bolt as shown in figure 26 pull
out the cocking piece and rotate it 90
degrees clockwise. At the same time rotate
the bolt head so the ejector slot on the
bolt head aligns with the ejector slot on
the bolt body.
27) Figure 27 shows the assembled bolt and
how every thing should be aligned. If you
have problems reassembling my recommendation
is to disassemble the bolt and start over.
It may take several times until you get it
just right. This is a difficult bolt to
disassemble it and requires some practice.
28) Figure 28 shows the position of the
cocking piece and how it needs to be aligned
to be reinstalled into the receiver.
29) Install the bolt.
30) Close the bolt and you have completed
the disassembly and reassembly of the
Portuguese 1904 Model 39 bolt.
