1) With the rifle pointed in a safe direction, pull the bolt to the rear and make certain the magazine is unloaded.
2) Depress the bolt stop. Remove the bolt from the receiver.
3) Depress the magazine catch.
4) Slightly slide the magazine floor plate to the rear.
5) Remove the magazine floor plate.
6) Slide the magazine spring from the follower. 
7) Slide the magazine spring from the magazine floor plate.
8) Unscrew the upper band screw.
9) Remove the upper band screw.
10) The upper band is hinged to open from left to right. Open the top portion as shown in figure 10.

 

11) Remove the upper band by sliding it forward.
12) Rotate the stacking hook as shown in figure 12.

 

13) Remove the stacking hook.

 

14) Remove the upper hand guard.

 

Some lower bands have a screw through the center.  This would need to be unscrewed and removed prior to removal of the lower band.
15) Padded rubber, quick clamps are invaluable in disassembling firearms. Compress the lower band spring as pictured in figure 15. This leaves your hands free to remove the lower band. 
16) Once started you can remove the clamp and continue to tap the lower band forward. Slide the lower band off of the barrel.

 

 

Most 98 type Military Mausers have locking screws that lock the trigger guard screws in place. The two figures to the left show the positions of the locking screws.
17) Unlock the forward locking screw.

 

18) Unscrew the forward guard screw.

 

 

 

19) Remove the forward guard screw.

 

 

20)  Unlock the rear locking screw.

 

21) Unscrew the rear guard screw.
22) Remove the rear guard screw.

 

23) Remove the guard. If the guard is difficult to remove you can turn the rifle over and tap the guard out from the top using a wooden dowel.

 

24) Separate the barreled receiver from the rifle stock.
25) Unscrew the rear, rear swivel screw. 
26) Remove the rear, rear swivel screw. 

 

27) Unscrew the forward, rear swivel screw. 
28) Remove the forward, rear swivel screw. 

 

29) Remove the rear swivel. 
30) Unscrew the upper butt plate screw.

 

31) Remove the upper butt plate screw.
32) Unscrew the lower butt plate screw.
33) Remove the lower butt plate screw.

 

34) Remove the butt plate.

 

35) Lift the rear sight.

 

 

36) Lift the hand guard from the front.

 

 

37) Rotate the hand guard in either direction 90 degrees.

 

 

 

38) Remove the hand guard and lower the rear sight.

 

 

39) Place a flat blade screw driver in the indentation at the forward part of the rear sight leaf.

 

40) Push down on the rear sight leaf with the screw driver while pulling the rear sight leaf to the rear.  This will allow you to remove the rear sight leaf.

 

41) Remove the rear sight leaf spring from the base.

 

42) Drift out the sear pin.

 

43) Remove the sear pin.  
44) Separate the trigger assembly from the receiver.

 

45) Remove the sear spring.

 

 

46) Drift out the trigger pin.

 

47) Separate the trigger from the sear.

 

48) Unscrew the bolt stop screw.

 

 

 

49) Remove the bolt stop screw.

 

 

 

50) Separate the bolt stop from the receiver. 

 

Reassembly Instructions

51) Install the bolt stop.

 

52)  Install the bolt stop screw.
53) Tighten the bolt stop screw.
54) Insert the trigger into the sear.
55) Insert the trigger pin. Tap in the trigger pin.
56) Insert the sear spring.
57) Compress the sear against the receiver.
58) I have found that using a quick clamp to hold the sear in place leaves your hands free while you install the sear pin.
59) Install the sear pin into the sear.
60) Tap the sear pin into place with a punch.
61) Test the trigger and make certain it does not bind and functions properly.
62) Install the rear sight leaf spring into the sight base.

 

 

63) Place a flat blade screw driver in the indentation at the forward part of the rear sight leaf.

 

64) Push down on the rear sight leaf with the screw driver while pushing the rear sight leaf forward. When you release pressure the leaf should stay held in place by the rear sight leaf spring.

 

65) Lift the rear sight.
66)  Turn the hand guard as shown in figure 66. Slide the hand guard over the rear sight.
67) Turn the hand guard so it is parallel to the barrel and the front of the hand guard is pointing towards the front sight. Slide the rear of the hand guard into the ring.
68) Set the rear hand guard in place.
69) Lower the rear sight

 

 

70) Replace the butt plate.
71) Install the upper butt plate screw.
72) Tighten the upper butt plate screw.
73) Install the lower butt plate screw.
74) Tighten the lower butt plate screw.
75) Install the rear swivel.
76) Install the rear, rear swivel screw.
77) Tighten the rear, rear swivel screw.
78) Install the forward, rear swivel screw.
79) Tighten the forward, rear swivel screw.
80)  Install the barreled receiver into the rifle stock.

 

 

81) Insert the trigger guard.
82) Insert the forward guard screw.
83) Insert the rear guard screw.
84) Tighten partially the forward guard screw.
85) Tighten partially the rear guard screw.
86) Tighten the forward guard screw completely.
87) Tighten completely the rear guard screw.

88) Lock the front locking screw.
89) Lock the rear locking screw.
90)  Slide the non tapered end of the magazine spring into the magazine floor plate.
91) Figure 91 shows the the side of the magazine spring with the tapered section. This is the section that fits into the bottom of the magazine follower.
92) Slide the tapered part of the magazine spring into the magazine follower.
93) Insert the magazine floor plate/follower assembly into the magazine well of the rifle.
94) Snap the magazine floor plate into place.
95) Slide the lower band onto the barrel and stock.
96) Slide the lower band over the spring and lock into place.
97) Install the upper hand guard.
98) Figure 98 shows the relationship of the stacking hook lug to the locking hole in the stock.
99) Insert the lug of the stacking hook into the recess in the stock.
100) Rotate the stacking hook so it points forward.
101) Figure 101 shows the open hinged upper band.
102) Slide the upper band into place and also holds the base of the stacking hook in place.
103) Close the upper band.
104) Install the upper band screw.
105) Tighten the upper band screw.
106) Insert the bolt into the receiver. Press down on the magazine follower. Push the bolt fully forward in the receiver. Close the bolt.
107) You have completed the disassembly and reassembly of the kar98a Mauser.
