1)
With the rifle pointed in a safe direction,
open the bolt and make sure the rifle is not
loaded. Pull the bolt to the rear of
the receiver and then close the bolt.

Rotate the safety to the middle and upright
position.
3)
Pull the bolt to the rear of the receiver.
Swing bolt release lever on left side of
receiver and remove the bolt.

Figure 4 shows the bolt sleeve lock on the
bolt sleeve.

Push the bolt sleeve lock in
6) Rotate the bolt
counter clockwise.
7)
After completely unscrewing the bolt sleeve
from the bolt body, remove from the bolt
body.
8)
Using a small screw driver lift the
extractor out of the groove and rotate
clockwise.
9)
Slide the extractor forward and off of the
bolt body.
10) Place firing pin
into the bolt disassembly disc in rifle
stock.
11) Compress the bolt
sleeve until the cocking sleeve clears and
can be turned in either direction.
12) Turn cocking sleeve 1/4 turn in either
direction.
13) Remove cocking sleeve and set aside.
Slowly release pressure on the bolt sleeve
and main spring. Allow main spring to fully
expand.
14) Remove the bolt sleeve.
15) Remove main spring.
16) Remove the firing pin from the rifle
stock's bolt disassembly disc.
17) Rotate safety lever all the way to the
right.
18) Remove the safety lever and set aside.
19) Figure 19 shows the bolt sleeve lock and
the position of the pin.
20) Depress the bolt sleeve lock until the
pin is in the center as shown in figure 20.
21) Using a small flat blade screw driver
push the pin towards you through the
channel.
22) Allow the bolt sleeve lock spring to
expand slowly.
23) Remove the bolt sleeve lock and spring.
24) Separate the bolt sleeve lock and
spring.
25) Figure 25 shows the completely
disassembled Mauser 98 bolt.
Reassembly

26) The bolt has a lug that fits into a
channel on the extractor as shown in figure
26.
27) Take the bolt body and the extractor and
slide the extractor's channel over the lug
on the bolt body.
28) Lift the top of the extractor up so it
clears the face of the bolt and allows you
to align with the groove in the bolt.
29) Figure 29 shows the extractor lined up
with the channel near the bolt face.
30) Rotate the extractor counter clockwise
until it fits into the channel.
31) Place the spring on the bolt sleeve
lock.
32) Place the bolt sleeve lock and spring
into the bolt sleeve.
33) Compress the bolt sleeve lock and push
the pin between and through the
channel.
34) Allow the bolt sleeve lock spring to
expand.
35) Insert safety into rear of bolt sleeve
as shown in figure 35.
36) Figure 36 shows the safety properly
installed.
37) Place firing pin into the bolt
disassembly disc in rifle stock.
38) Place the main spring onto the firing
pin.
39) Rotate the safety lever so it is in the
center position and then place the sleeve
onto the rear of the firing pin as shown.
The firing pin and sleeve are keyed so it is
easy to combine the two parts.
40) Compress the main
spring by applying downward pressure on the
sleeve. All the while make certain to keep
the safety in the middle position.
41) Place the cocking sleeve onto the back
of the firing pin.
42) Rotate the cocking sleeve 1/4 turn so
the bottom is facing the bottom side of the
bolt.
43) Allow the main spring and bolt sleeve to
expand locking the cocking sleeve into place
as shown in figure 43.
44) Insert the firing pin assembly into the
backend of the bolt body.
45) Rotate the bolt sleeve clockwise.
46) Figure 46 shows the bolt sleeve in its
final resting position.
47) Rotate the extractor to be directly over
the right hand bolt lug as shown in figure
47.
48) Insert bolt back into the rifle's
receiver.
49) Close the bolt.
50) Move safety from middle position and
you are finished disassembling and
reassembling the Mauser bolt.
