1) Open the bolt and make sure the rifle
is pointed in a safe direction and is unloaded.
2) Swing the thumb piece of the bolt stop.
3) Remove
the bolt.
4) Loosen the stacking
swivel screw.
5) Loosen the upper band
screw.
6) Remove the upper band
screw.
7) Remove the upper band.
8) Loosen (only - do not
remove) the lower band screw.
9) Using a punch/drift, tap out the lower band pin.
10) Turn the rifle over
and extract the lower band pin.
11) Remove the upper handguard
and set aside.
12) Slide lower band
forward.
13) Remove the lower handguard
and set aside.
14) Depress the floor plate
catch.
15) Slide floor plate
to rear and remove.
16) Lift the end of the
magazine spring on the bottom of the
follower.
17) Slide the magazine
spring off of the magazine follower.
18) Lift the end of the
magazine spring on the bottom of the floor
plate.
19) Slide the magazine
spring off of the floor plate.
20) Unscrew the guard front
screw.
21) Unscrew the guard cover
rear screw.
22) Remove the guard rear
screw.
23) Remove the guard front
screw.
24) Remove the guard
and set aside.
25) Using a punch/drift,
tap out the floor plate catch pin.
26) Remove the floor
plate catch pin.
27) Remove the floor
plate catch.
28) Remove the floor
plate catch spring.
29) Remove the barrel
and receiver assembly from the stock.
30) Unscrew the rear
base screw of the rear swivel assembly.
31) Remove the rear base
screw of the rear swivel assembly.
32) Unscrew the forward
base screw of the rear swivel assembly.
33) Remove the forward
base screw of the rear swivel assembly.
34) Remove the rear
swivel assembly.
35) Unscrew the small
butt plate screw.
36) Remove the small
butt plate screw.
37) Unscrew the large
butt plate screw.
38) Remove the large
butt plate screw.
39) Remove the butt
plate.
40) Unscrew the butt
plate trap door spring screw.
41) Remove the butt
plate trap door spring screw.
42) Remove the butt
plate trap door spring.
43) Tap out the butt
plate trap door pin.
44) Remove the butt
plate trap door pin.
45) Remove the butt
plate trap door.
46) Remove the magazine
box.
47) Push out the sear
pin from the right side to the left.
48) Lift out the
trigger/sear assembly and remove the sear
spring.
49) Push out the trigger
pin.
50) Remove the trigger
pin.
51) Separate the trigger
from the sear.
52) Unscrew the safety
lock holder screw.
53) Remove the safety
lock holder screw.
54) Remove the safety
lock holder.
55) Rotate the safety to
point to the rear of the receiver. Insert a
small tool to depress the safety lock
plunger.
56) With safety lock
plunger depressed remove the safety.
57) Remove the safety
lock plunger.
58) Remove the safety
lock plunger spring.
59) Unscrew the bolt
stop screw.
60) Remove the bolt stop
screw.
61) Remove the bolt
stop.
62) Remove the bolt stop
spring rest.
63) Pivot the bolt stop
spring back.
64) Remove the bolt stop
spring.
65) Separate the ejector
spring and the bolt stop.
66) Place a small
slotted screw driver into the slot in
the rear sight nut. This will hold it in
place while you unscrew the rear sight
screw.
67) While holding the
rear sight nut in place unscrew the rear
sight screw.
68) Remove the rear
sight nut.
69) Remove the rear
sight screw.
70) Remove the rear
sight.
71) Unscrew the rear
sight base screw.
72) Remove the rear
sight base screw.
73) Remove the rear
sight spring.
Reassembly Instructions
74) Slide the rear sight
spring into the front of the base. Align the
screw hole with the screw hole in the sight
base.
75) Insert the rear
sight base screw.
76) Tighten the rear
sight base screw.
77) Set the rear sight
in place.
78) Clamp down the rear
sight and use a small tool to align the axis
holes.
79) Insert the rear
sight screw from right to left.
80) Place the rear sight
nut on the end of the screw.
81) Place a small
slotted screw driver into the slot in
the rear sight nut. This will hold it in
place while you unscrew the rear sight
screw.
82) While holding the
rear sight nut in place tighten the rear
sight screw.
83) Make certain the
rear sight works properly.
84) Insert the safety
lock plunger spring.
85) When the safety lock
plunger is installed you should be able to
look through the safety hole and see the
picture as shown in figure 85.
86) Insert the safety
lock plunger as shown in figure 85.
87) Insert a small tool
to depress the safety lock plunger. Rotate
the safety to point to the rear of the
receiver and insert. This is probably the
most difficult task in the reassembly of the
m1917.
88) Replace the safety
lock holder.
89) Insert the safety
lock holder screw.
90) Tighten the safety
lock holder screw.
91) Combine the ejector
spring and the bolt stop. The small spring
arm should be pointing in the direction as
shown in figure 91.
92) Pivot the bolt stop
spring from front to back.
93) Replace the bolt
stop spring rest and align the slot.
94) Install the bolt
stop assembly with the end of the spring
resting in the groove in the top of the bolt
stop spring rest as shown in figure 94.
95) Hold the bolt stop
on the receiver by using a clamp.
96) Insert the bolt stop
screw.
97) Tighten the bolt
stop screw.
98) Combine the trigger
and sear.
99) Insert the trigger
pin.
100) Install the sear
spring.
101) Place the sear
spring into the hole cut out in the bottom
of the receiver and hold the trigger/sear
assembly in place.
102) Insert the sear pin
by hand from the left hand side to right.
The head of the pin is a small disc and
there is a corresponding hole for the disc
to rest in on the left side of the sear.
103) Cycle the trigger
to make certain it functions properly.
104) Install the
magazine box.
105) Install the trap
door on the butt plate.
106) Install the butt
plate trap door pin.
107) Tap in the butt
plate trap door pin.
108) Install the butt
plate trap door spring.
109) Install the butt
plate trap door spring screw.
110) Tighten the butt
plate trap door spring screw.
111) Install the butt
plate.
112) Insert the large
butt plate screw.
113) Tighten the large
butt plate screw.
114) Insert the small
butt plate screw.
115) Tighten the small
butt plate screw.
116) Install the rear
swivel assembly.
117) Replace the forward
base screw of the rear swivel assembly.
118) Tighten the forward
base screw of the rear swivel assembly.
119) Replace the rear
base screw of the rear swivel assembly.
120) Tighten the rear
base screw of the rear swivel assembly.
121) Pivot the barreled
receiver into the stock.
122) Make certain the
hand guard ring is aligned properly.
123) Replace the floor
plate catch spring.
124) Replace the floor
plate catch.
125) Install the floor
plate catch pin.
126) Tap in the floor
plate catch pin.
127) Install the guard.
128) Install the guard front
screw.
129) Install the guard
rear
screw.
130) Partially tighten
the guard front
screw.
131) Partially tighten
the guard rear
screw.
132) Fully tighten the guard front
screw.
133) Fully tighten the guard
rear
screw.
134) Insert the beveled
side of the magazine spring into the bottom
of the magazine follower.
135) Insert the
non-beveled side of the magazine spring onto
the bottom of the floor plate.
136) Make certain both
ends of the spring are securely held in
place.
137) Install the
magazine/floor plate assembly.
138) Push down on the
floor plate so the floor plate catch locks
it in place.
139) Replace the lower handguard
and set aside.
140) Slide the lower
band into place.
141) Replace the upper
hand guard.
142) Insert the lower
band pin.
143) Tap in the lower band pin.
144) Tighten the lower band screw.
145) Slide on the upper
band.
146) Insert the upper
band screw.
147) Tighten the upper
band screw.
148) Tighten the
stacking swivel screw.
149) Insert the bolt.
150) Depress the
magazine follower.
151) Close the bolt and
you have completed the disassembly and
reassembly of the U.S. Model 1917 Rifle.
