With the rifle pointed in a safe direction,
open the bolt and make sure the rifle is not
loaded.

4)
Remove the
bolt from the receiver.
5)
Depress the magazine floor plate catch.

Slide the magazine spring out of the slot in
the bottom of the magazine follower.
8)
Slide the magazine spring out of the slot in
the bottom of the magazine floor plate.
9)
Unscrew the cleaning rod.
10)
Remove the cleaning rod.
Locking Screws
Most 98 type
Military Mausers have locking screws
that lock the trigger guard screws
in place. The two figures to the
left show the positions of the
locking screws.
11)
Unlock the rear guard screw and then unscrew the
rear guard screw.
12) Unlock the forward guard screw and
unscrew the forward guard screw.
13) Remove the forward guard screw.
14) Remove the rear guard screw.
15) Remove the guard. If the guard is
difficult to remove you can turn the rifle
over and tap the guard out from the top
using a wooden dowel.
16) Unscrew the front sight cover screw.
17) Remove the front sight cover screw.
18) Remove the front sight cover.
19) I have found that padded rubber, quick
clamps are invaluable in disassembling
firearms. Compress the upper band spring
with the quick clamp. This leaves your hands
free to remove the upper band.
20) Using non-marring tools such as a wooden
dowel and a mallet, tap off the upper band.
21) Remove the upper band.
22) Loosen the forward swivel screw.
23) Figure 23 shows the lower band and the
small screw that holds the band in place. On
most models this is a specialized screw that
requires a specialized tool to remove. I use
a pair of locking pliers to unscrew this
screw. If you are worried about scratching
or damaging the screw, you can place
electrical tap on the screw head prior to
placing the locking pliers on it.
24) Lock the locking pliers on the screw and
rotate counter clockwise. This will unscrew
the screw.
25) Remove the lower band screw.
26) Slide the lower band forward and off of
the barrel.
27) Unscrew the rear sight screw.
28) Remove the rear sight screw.
29) Separate the barreled receiver from the
rifle stock.
30) Figure 30 shows the screwdriver pointing
to a band spring that is found on most Vz24
rifles. It is used to secure the rear of the
hand guard to the rear of the barrel.
31) Lift the rear sight.
32) Note: It is easy to crack
the hand guard during this step. Please be
careful and take it slow while removing the
spring and hand guard.
Slowly lift the hand guard from the
front to the rear. The band springs on some hand guards may be
stuck in place because of either years of
rust or cosmoline. If this is the case then
push the band spring off of the barrel from
underneath the barrel.
33) Lift the hand guard and rotate in either
direction 90 degrees.
34) Remove the hand guard and lower the rear
sight.
35) Using a punch, tap out the sear pin.
36) Remove the sear pin and separate the
trigger assembly from the receiver. Remove
the sear spring.
37) Tap out the trigger pin.
38) Separate the trigger and sear.
39) Using a punch, tap out the rear sight
pin.
40)
Remove the rear sight pin.
41) Place a flat blade screw driver in the
indentation at the forward part of the rear
sight leaf.
42)
Remove the rear sight leaf.
43) Tap the rear sight leaf spring forward.
44) Remove the rear sight leaf spring from
the base.
45) Lift the rear sight base from the front.
46) It is easier to remove the bolt stop
screw if the bolt stop is held in place.
Unscrew the bolt stop screw.
47) Remove the bolt stop screw.
48) Separate the bolt stop from the
receiver.
Reassembly
Instructions
49) Install the bolt stop.
50) Install the bolt stop screw.
51) Tighten the bolt stop screw. Open and
close the bolt stop a couple of times to
make certain it is correctly installed and
not binding.
52) Insert the rear sight base under the lip
to the rear as shown in figure 52. Set the
front of the rear sight frame down.
53) Install the rear sight leaf spring
into the sight base.
54) Tap the rear sight leaf spring to the
rear.
55) Place a flat blade screw driver in
the indentation at the forward part of the
rear sight leaf. Push down on the rear sight
leaf with the screw driver while pushing the
rear sight leaf forward. When you release
pressure the leaf should stay held in place
by the rear sight leaf spring.
56) Insert the rear sight pin.
57) Tap the rear sight pin in place.
58) Insert the trigger into the sear as
shown in figure 58.
59) Insert the trigger pin. Tap in the
trigger pin.
60) Insert the sear spring.
61) Compress the sear against the receiver. I
have found that using a quick clamp to hold
the sear in place leaves your hands free
while you install the sear pin.
62) Install the sear pin into the sear.
63) Tap the sear pin into place with a punch.
64) Test the trigger and make certain it does
not bind and functions properly.
65) Lift the rear sight. Turn the hand guard
as shown in figure 65. Slide the hand guard
over the rear sight.
66) Turn the hand guard so it is parallel to
the barrel and the front of the hand guard
is pointing towards the front sight.
67) Set the rear hand guard in place and
lower the rear sight.
68) Insert the rear sight screw.
69) Tighten the rear sight screw.
70) Install the barreled receiver into the
rifle stock.

80) Insert the lower band screw.
81) Lock the locking pliers on the screw and
tighten.
82) Tighten the forward swivel screw.
83) Compress the upper band spring
with the quick clamp. This leaves your hands
free to replace the upper band.
84) Slide the upper band over the front sight
and onto the barrel.
85) Using non-marring tools such as a wooden
dowel and a mallet, tap on the upper band.
86) Replace the front sight cover.
87) Insert the front sight cover screw.
88) Tighten the front sight cover screw.
89) Slide the tapered part of the magazine
spring into the magazine follower.
90) Slide the other end of the magazine
spring into the magazine floor plate.
91) Insert the magazine floor plate/follower
assembly into the magazine well of the
rifle.
92) Snap the magazine floor plate into place.
93) Insert the cleaning rod.
94) Tighten the cleaning rod.
95) Insert the bolt into the receiver.
96) Push the bolt fully forward in the
receiver.
97) Close the bolt. You have completed the
disassembly and reassembly of the Czech Vz
24 Mauser.
