the receiver.

Locking Screws
Most 98 type
Military Mausers have locking screws
that lock the trigger guard screws
in place. The two figures to the
left show the positions of the
locking screws.
11) Unlock the rear
guard screw and then unscrew the
rear guard screw.
12) Unlock the forward
guard screw and unscrew the forward guard screw.
13) Remove the forward
guard screw.
14) Remove the rear
guard screw.
15) Remove the guard. If
the guard is difficult to remove you can
turn the rifle over and tap the guard out
from the top using a wooden dowel.
16) I have found that
padded rubber, quick clamps are invaluable
in disassembling firearms. Compress the
upper band spring with the quick clamp. This
leaves your hands free to remove the upper
band.
17) Using non-marring
tools such as a wooden dowel and a mallet,
tap off the upper band.
18) Remove the upper band.
19) Compress the lower band spring with the
quick clamp. This leaves your hands free to
remove the lower band.
20) Using non-marring tools such as a wooden
dowel and a mallet, tap off the lower band.
21) Slide the lower band forward and off of
the barrel.
22) Unscrew the rear sight screw.
23) Remove the rear sight screw.
24) Separate the barreled receiver from the
rifle stock.
25) Figure 25 shows the screwdriver pointing
to a band spring that is found on most 98/22
rifles. It is used to secure the rear of the
hand guard to the rear of the barrel.
26) Lift the rear sight.
27) Note: It is easy to crack
the hand guard during this step. Please be
careful and take it slow while removing the
spring and hand guard.
Slowly lift the hand guard from the
front to the rear. The band springs on some hand guards may be
stuck in place because of either years of
rust or cosmoline. If this is the case then
push the band spring off of the barrel from
underneath the barrel.
28) Lift the hand guard and rotate in either
direction 90 degrees.
29) Remove the hand guard and lower the rear
sight.
30) Using a punch, tap out the sear pin.
31) Remove the sear pin and separate the
trigger assembly from the receiver. Remove
the sear spring.
32) Tap out the trigger pin.
33) Separate the trigger and sear.
34) Using a punch, tap out the rear sight
pin.
35) Remove the rear sight
pin.
36) Place a flat blade screw driver in the
indentation at the forward part of the rear
sight leaf.
37) Remove the rear sight leaf.
38) Tap the rear sight leaf spring forward.
39) Remove the rear sight leaf spring from
the base.
40)
Lift the rear sight base from the front.
41) It is easier to remove the bolt stop
screw if the bolt stop is held in place.
Unscrew the bolt stop screw.
42)
Remove the bolt stop screw.
43) Separate the bolt stop from the
receiver.
Reassembly
Instructions

shown in figure 53.
54) Insert the trigger pin. Tap in the

clamp to hold the sear in place leaves your
hands free while you install the sear pin.

punch.
59) Test the trigger and make certain it

the quick clamp. This leaves your hands free
to replace the upper band.
76) Slide the upper band over the front
sight and onto the barrel.
77) Using non-marring tools such as a
wooden dowel and a mallet, tap on the upper
band.
78) Slide the tapered part of the
magazine spring into the magazine follower.
79) Slide the other end of the magazine
spring into the magazine floor plate.
80) Insert the magazine floor
plate/follower assembly into the magazine
