Like so many other fellows; the first rifle I could truly call my own was a .22 caliber Remington rifle.   It amazed me that such a relatively inexpensive arm was so darn accurate!   I wanted to know more about my rifle.

I’ve always loved the history of arms, especially history on the arms I own, or have owned, and the history of the companies that have produced them.  At that time, I sought out what little had been written about my particular model.   I only wish “Remington .22 Rimfire Rifles” by John Gyde´ & Roy Marcot had been available back then!

Author’s John Gyde´ & Roy Marcot start this fine work off with a fascinating history of the Remington Arms Company.  From there, they delve into the earliest Remington .22 caliber arms, and ultimately take the reader through to the Remington .22 caliber arms currently under production.

The included chapters are:

  • Remington History

  • Remington’s Earliest .22 Rifles

  • Remington Slide-Action Rifles

  • Remington Autoloading Rifles

  • Remington Bolt Action Rifles

  • Remington Nylon Rifles

  • Remington Combination Guns

  • Remington Smooth Bore Rifles

  • Remington Prototype Rifles

This book is the result of 6 years exhaustive work by a most dedicated two-man team.  Every chapter is replete with color photos of rifles, diagrams, specification tables, pictures of period ammunition boxes, pictures of end labels on rifle boxes, color and B&W Remington advertisements, vintage photos of people with Remington rifles, etc.  The pictures, tables and illustrations are tastefully blended in with the copy that explains each model.

The authors take pains to not only explain the ‘what’ of each model, but, also the  ‘how’ and ‘why’.  By describing the events and time era that surround a rifle, they give the reader a more complete understanding of that particular arm.   This is well displayed in the way the authors take time to describe those models of Remington .22 training rifles  supplied to the US Government.

Ever wonder about those “mysterious” Remington Model 541-X .22 trainers that were made only for the government?  The story is there.  Or about the Remington Model 513-T’s acquired during WWII, not to mention the Model 521-T Government Special trainers. Who could forget those super-quality Model 40X and 40-XB match rifles used by the US Military.   Did you know there was a prototype nylon series rifle built for military consideration?  It’s all in the book!

John Gyde´ recently took time out of his busy schedule to discuss the new book and Remington rifles and with me.  We had a most pleasant phone conversation.  John was quick to point out all the fine folks that helped him and Roy on the journey to create this exquisite work.

I whole-heartily recommend this book.  It is the authority on .22 caliber Remington rifles.

Every day now, our better halves keep reminding us that they will need “that list”.  Put Remington .22 Rimfire Rifles by John Gyde´ & Roy Marcot at the top of the list, with a big star next to it.  Also, send her the link in her email... make it easy on the little woman after all!
