1) With the rifle pointed in a safe direction pull back the operating rod handle and ensure the rifle is unloaded. 
2) Pull the bolt to the rear of the receiver and open the bolt stop.  Then remove the bolt and set aside.
3) Unscrew the cleaning rod.
4) Remove the cleaning rod.
5) Unscrew the rear guard screw.
6) Unscrew the forward guard screw.
7) Remove the forward guard screw.
8) Remove the rear guard screw.
9) Remove the guard. If the guard is difficult to remove you can turn the rifle over and tap the guard out from the top using a wooden dowel.
10) Loosen the floor plate screw.
11) Pivot the floor plate open.
12) Remove the floor plate screw.
13) Remove the follower assembly.
14) Depress the magazine catch located at the front of the inside of the trigger guard as shown in figure 14.
15) Slide the magazine box downward.
16) Separate the magazine box from the trigger guard.
17) I have found that padded rubber, quick clamps are invaluable in disassembling firearms. Compress the upper band spring with the quick clamp. This leaves your hands free to remove the upper band.  
18) Using non-marring tools such as a wooden dowel and a mallet, tap off the upper band.


 

19) Remove the upper band.
20) Remove the clamp.
21) Loosen the lower band's swivel screw.
22) Compress the lower band spring and slide the lower band forward.
23) Slide the lower band forward and off of the barrel.
24) Separate the barreled receiver from the rifle stock.
25) Unscrew the rear, rear sling screw.
26) Remove the rear, rear sling screw.
27) Unscrew the forward, rear sling screw.
28) Remove the forward, rear sling screw.
29) Remove the rear sling. 
30) Unscrew the upper butt plate screw.
31) Remove the upper butt plate screw.
32) Unscrew the lower butt plate screw.
33) Remove the lower butt plate screw.
34) Remove the butt plate.
35) Loosen the wire at the front of the hand guard.
36) Remove the wire at the front of the hand guard.
37) Loosen the wire at the rear of the hand guard.
38) Remove the wire at the rear of the hand guard.
39) Remove the hand guard.
40) Using a punch, tap out the sear pin.
41) Remove the sear pin and separate the trigger assembly from the receiver.
42) Remove the sear spring.
43) Tap out the trigger pin.
44) Remove the trigger pin.
45) Separate the trigger and sear.
46) Using a punch, tap out the rear sight pin.
47) Remove the rear sight pin.
48) Remove the rear sight leaf.
49) Tap out the bolt stop pin.
50) Remove the bolt stop.

Reassembly Instructions

51) Replace the bolt stop.
52) Compress the bolt stop spring and hold in place. A quick clamp works great for this leaving your hands free to work.
53) Tap in the bolt stop pin.
54) Install the rear sight leaf.
55) Compress the sight leaf against the flat spring and hold in place with a quick clamp.
56) Insert the rear sight pin.
57) Tap the rear sight pin in place.
58)  Insert the trigger into the sear as shown in figure 58.
59) Insert the trigger pin.
60) Tap in the trigger pin.
61) Insert the sear spring.
62) Pivot in the trigger assembly compressing it forward against the spring. Then put the rear into place.
63) Compress the sear against the receiver. I have found that using a quick clamp to hold the sear in place leaves your hands free while you install the sear pin.
64) Install the sear pin into the sear. Tap the sear pin into place with a punch.

 

 

65) Test the trigger and make certain it does not bind and functions properly.
66) Install the butt plate.
67) Install the lower butt plate screw.
68) Tighten the lower butt plate screw.
69) Install the upper butt plate screw.
70) Tighten the upper butt plate screw.
71) Replace the rear sling. 
72) Replace the rear, rear sling screw.
73) Tighten the rear, rear sling screw.
74) Replace the forward, rear sling screw.
75) Tighten the forward, rear sling screw.
76) Replace the hand guard.
77) Gut copper wire in four inch lengths.
78) Wrap the lengths of copper wire around the hand guard with the wire resting in the channels. Twist the ends of the wire so the hand guard is held in place with adequate tension.
79) Cut off the excess pig tails of the twisted wire.
80) The remaining ends of the wire pig tails should be pointing towards each other.
81) Place the barreled receiver in place in the stock. Make certain that the hand guard wire rests in the channels cut into the stock.
82) Slide the lower band over the barrel. 
83) Slide the lower band over the band spring and lock into place.
84) Depress the upper band spring and slide the upper band over the barrel. Note the alignment of the bayonet lug in figure 84.
85) Once the forward band is fully back, let the upper band spring expand and hold the upper band locked in place.
86) Tighten the lower band's swivel screw.
87) Insert the magazine box into the trigger guard.
88)Slide the magazine box fully into place allowing the magazine catch to lock it into place.
89) Pivot the floor plate open and insert the follower assembly.
90) Make certain the end of the magazine follower arm that has a hole drilled in it sits in its proper position so the magazine plate screw can pass through the hold and anchor it into place.
91) Insert the floor plate screw.
92) Tighten the floor plate screw.
93) Insert the hand guard.
94) Insert the forward guard screw.
95) Insert the rear guard screw.
96) Partially tighten the forward guard screw.
97) Partially tighten the rear guard screw.
98) Completely tighten the forward guard screw.
99) Completely tighten the rear guard screw.
100) Insert the cleaning rod.
101) Tighten the cleaning rod.
102) Insert the bolt into the receiver.
103) Push the bolt fully forward in the receiver. Close the bolt. You have completed the disassembly and reassembly of the 1891 Argentine Mauser.
