Photos and Instructions by R. Ted Jeo

Please note that these instructions will also work with the 1916 Short Mauser (non-Guardia Civil)

1) Check to make sure unloaded. Note silver magazine follower is a replacement that allows for single loading of rounds (see article on Guardia Civil Mauser).
2) Remove the bolt using bolt release on side of rifle.
3) Using an appropriate device, push magazine release button. Push down and slide place back toward trigger.
4) Remove magazine spring and follower.
5) Some Mausers have screw locks. Rotate the head of the smaller screw such that you can rotate freely the larger head of the receiver screws. Or you may remove the locking screw.

Stuck Screw Suggestions

  • Spray some solvent or penetrating oil and let them soak;
  • Use a proper fitting screw driver;
  • Use a hammer and punch to tap the screw in the direction to loosen.

6) Remove or align rear locking screw.
7) Unscrew front receiver screw.
8) Remove front receiver screw.
9) Remove rear receiver screw.
10) Remove the trigger guard by pulling straight upwards.

11) Push the rear barrel band spring inward and pull cleaning rod straight out. It does not screw in.

12) Note the notch on the cleaning rod where it locks with the rear barrel band spring.

13) Removal of bayonet mount and front cap. You may need to push down on the forward band spring. Knock the bayonet mount toward the front of the barrel.

14) Note forward band spring and forward band is loose.

15) Knock out retaining pin holding  the cap.

16) Pull the cap forward and out.

17) Loosen swivel barrel band (the rifle pictured has a nut on the bottom side).
18) Push down on the rear barrel band spring and slide rear barrel band off. You may need a “third” helping hand or device if your band spring is difficult to push in.

19) Lift the rear sight.

Pull/push for-end stock slightly toward muzzle to pull it out from under the receiver ring.

NOTE: There may be small nails holding the for-end stock in place.

20) Rotate the wood around rear sight and lift away.
21) Turn stock over and action/barrel should pop out. You may need to tap lightly on the stock to release the action.

22) Figure 22 shows the disassembled 1916 Short Mauser (Guardia Civil).
